The pair of scholars who died in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the release by Rhode Island officials of the only individual of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were injured in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man detained in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our community”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Law enforcement that raided the lodging seized two handguns and magazines when the individual was detained, according to reports.
