New York's next mayor states his intention to live in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
