As Sunbathers Ran From Violence, Popular Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her own backyard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, heard cracking sounds ringing out across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He was sprinting at something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews treating dozens of victims.

Local Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the local area, with the patrol base beside the site of the violence transforming into a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, such as going into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

Following the attack, statements of appreciation circulated widely. One post expressed thanks for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of beach patrol issued a message, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the group stated. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines secure for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.
