Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to achieving success.
Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge
The Spanish coach took over on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that early success stands as his only significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.
“I can,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things must occur in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”
This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.
Present Challenges
With second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.
He is under a contract with 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver in the immediate future.
The Manager's Mandate
He went on to explain, emphasizing the ongoing need to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the message you convey.”
Arteta continued, commending the consistent faith from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as paramount. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”
Latest Fitness Blow
The team heads into the upcoming game dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.
A Different Club
Regardless of the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he initially took over.
The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”
He finished by saying, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
