Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
